I would offer this up as contender for perfect pop album. It’s catchy, witty, soulful and intelligent – ABC often get lumped in with 80s nostalgia but this is a classic. I got it on vinyl and was reminded of how great the lyrics are listening to it today

Well, well
My pessimism last night was ill founded (still you can’t blame me for having pessimism as default mode). What a strange night – my constituency went back to labour overturning a 2k Tory majority, with a 77% turnout.
It’s the hope that kills
When the election was called I was resigned to a Tory landslide but since then labour have improved & May has gone into a tail spin. For a moment you think a progressive alliance might be possible – we could be a forward looking country. But the latest polls suggest it’ll come out similar to now – but even worse as May has now been weakened and so will do anything to placate the hard right and the Tory press, so things are going to get much, much worse. But hey, it ain’t over till it’s over
Monarch of the Glen
I’m up in Edinburgh for a couple of days – was up at 4 to drive to Bristol. Had a meeting and then gave a presentation. I went for a look around the National Gallery for an hour this afternoon then
Pawnbroker
I watched this film the other night – it’s amazing, and has a cool soundtrack by Quincy Jones. So I picked up a cheap copy on eBay
Rainy summer
Rained heavily all day, yay
Peace lily
We could all do with a bit more peace right now
Sanders at Hay
Went to the Bernie Sanders talk at the Hay Festival today, with my daughter. He was very inspirational & as an added bonus the wonderful Michael Sheen conducted the interview afterwards.
Sleeping dog
Today over on instagram I decided to catalogue Bruno’s sleeping habits. He pretty much sleeps all day. I took pics of 5 different naps but basically if he’s not eating or out for a walk, he’s sleeping. Sounds ideal to me
Champions league
Went to see the Women’s Champions League final tonight between Lyon & Paris (in Cardiff). There was a crowd of 22,000. Unfortunately it was a rather dull game – one of those where both teams are afraid of losing & defences are on top and you can’t see goals coming. Sure enough it ended 0-0 after extra time & went to penalties, with Lyon winning (deservedly). The Lyon number 3 & 5 were particularly impressive I thought.
