Oer16 finished today – well done Lorna & Melissa for organising a great conference. It was so Sunni everyone sat outside the pub afterwards.

Open dialogue
I was up at 4 to catch a flight to Edinburgh for OER16. This photo shows Nicole Allen & Jim Groom in discussion. It is symbolic because they can be seen as representing different approaches to openness. Nicole works in Washington, lobbying government to employ open licensing, and this has been successful in recent years. Jim coined the edupunk term and views openness as experimenting. I think we need both approaches within the discipline so that’s why I like this photo, it represents the conference as a whole.
Gwen John
I’m doing the final assignment of my Art History course on Welsh artist Gwen John. We have to develop a research question concerning the display of a work of art. I have chosen one of hers, so yesterday went into Cardiff National Museum to do some research (how the placement of her work relates to other artists, etc). I picked up some Gwen John swag while I was there, for inspiration when I’m writing. A book, a reproduction of “A Girl in Profile”, and yes, a mug.
Cardiff Fire
Tonight we went to see Cardiff Fire play. They are 3 divisions below Cardiff Devils, but it was a playoff semi final game. I think it’s analogous to methadone – not as good as the real thing but better than nothing.
Game was pretty good – ended 4-4 and then Fire won in penalty shoot out, taking them through to final. We can drag the hockey season out a bit more!
Taffs Well thermal spring
Walked Bruno the the thermal spring in Taffs Well today. It’s situated at the back of the park and has a little information audio thing you can play. Apparently it takes 5000 years for the water to find it’s way back to the surface, and it has a temperature of 21C.
Narcissus considers his reflection
Flew back from Krakow today, and picked up Bruno. Took him for a walk by the Ely river while daughter did drumming. He looks in the water and thinks “who is that handsome dog?”
Lipowa 4
This is the site of Schindler’s enamel factory which we visited today
Birkenau
My daughter and I went to Auschwitz today (she is studying nazi Germany in history). I’d been before but still found it overwhelming at times.
Face the dragon
Went to the OE global conference today, I was giving a presentation in the final slot. I got everyone to turn around and say hi to my daughter just to fulfill the embarrassing dad role.
Krakow
Second full day of GO-GN seminar today. Some excellent presentations from the students. I managed to get out of the hotel for 20 minutes at lunchtime.
