I planted my daffodils bulbs late (not until the new year), so they’re only just coming out. Which is good as they’re in my veg plot which looks barren otherwise until the other stuff comes through.
These are your standard, all yellow ones which remind me very much of the ones you used to make at school out of cardboard.

Rockery update
Have developed the rockery a bit further with more plans. and raise it up a bit at the back, and generally made it bigger to get away from the whole ‘looks a bit like a grave’ sense. It’s a work in progress, I’ll add some more bits to it over time, but it works quite nicely as a feature now.
Howe Gelb
Went to see Howe Gelb (of Giant Sand) tonight in Bristol. It was at a lovely venue inside an old church, St Georges. Gelb is described as the grandfather of alt-country and has released around 40 albums under different names (he’s not sure himself how many). He’s very dry and relaxed, chatting to the audience about choosing to come here by train instead of flying RyanAir for instance.
He played a few songs and then we had a preview of the Giant Sand film
Cherry blossom
My neighbour has a cherry blossom tree that grows over the fence. It’s lovely to see it come into bloom. It always seems quite short lived, but like Tyrell says in Bladerunner “The light that burns twice as bright burns half as long – and you have burned so very, very brightly”
Webcam guardian
This fella sits atop the webcam on my monitor, ensuring no-one hijacks it.
PS – I would like to pretend someone bought me this as a quirky gift, but I have to buy my own quirky gifts.
Blaze win
And, rather unexpectedly, Coventry Blaze won the playoffs. They were playing the Sheffield Steelers, who no-one likes (except Steelers fans) so had the support of all neutrals. They played very well, and their netminder, the eccentric but excellent, Stewart, was outstanding.
Hockey city
We are up in Nottingham for the ice hockey playoff weekends. 4 team play over two days to win the playoff cup. Sadly, Cardiff are not one of them, but fans of all teams come here for the final games of the season. It’s like living in an alternative ‘hockey world” – in every restaurant, shop, bar you go in, everyone is wearing hockey jerseys (both British and NHL ones of all teams), and talking ice hockey.
Goth grass
Yesterday I created a rockery type feature in my garden, with welsh slate and a collection of grasses. It’s still a work in progress, I need more plants and also to build it up a bit. It slightly resembles a grave at the moment. Anyway, I planted this black dragon grass on it. If goths did gardening…
Beer club
I joined this online beer club, Beer52, the other week (I got a 3 months for the price of 2 offer). You get 10 beers a month from micro-breweries around the UK. The first box arrived today, there are some interesting ones to try in there. I’m not sure I’ll stick with it when I have to pay full price (£24 for 8 beers a month), but you know, thought I’d try the whole beer connoisseur thing, although really you need someone else to join in so you can compare notes.
What is the first rule of beer club?
Cardiff skyline
Went into town today with daughter for lunch and cinema. This was taken from the top floor of the cinema. Has a kind of apocalyptic feel, it really was that grey today.
