Seven beasts

New wall art today – a Cuban film festival poster for a Japanese film, which translates as “Seven beasts”. I don’t know the film, just like the pic. I think the film is a 1967 one that is known as the Return of the Filthy Seven, which is certainly an intriguing title.

Victory mob

Went to see first proper ice hockey game of the season tonight, Cardiff vs Hull Stingrays. It was a frustrating match, we had loads of shots, but only scored twice, they had about three attempts and scored twice also. It went into sudden death overtime then (they don’t end hockey matches with a draw, that’s the american influence I guess). We got a penalty shot because they moved the goal, and Jake Morissette scored it, ending the game. This is him being mobbed by team mates. Another home game tomorrow night.

French Royal flush

Daughter brought back some playing cards from Chamonix. In those films where they play poker one player always ends up with a Royal flush, which is actually very rare. In French the King, Queen and Jack are replaced with R (Roi), D (Dame) and V (Valet). I think they still call it a royal flush, and not a republican flush. Or a Royale with cheese.

Peak beard

Have been toying with growing a beard. I’m not sure if this counts as one yet (Nigel told me off for claiming beard with a weaker effort). I get to this stage and then it gets itchy and I shave it off, so I think this is peak beard for me.

Alt C gang

This is from the meal last night, so bit of a blipcheat. At my table there was Catherine Cronin, David White, Martin Hawksey, David Kernohan, Josie Fraser, Graham Attwell, Audrey Watters and Kin Lane. That’s a lot of edtech goodness.

Corridor of power

I was asked to be a ‘witness’ at the Digital Skills subcommittee at the House of Lords today, which meant getting an early train from the Alt C conference, doing the session and then going back to the conference. The session went ok, I didn’t have the knowledge of policy that my co-witness David Hughess had, but I stressed the open education angle. This is the committee corridor.
