A herd of herdy (mugs)

The herdy (or Herdwick) sheep are found in the Lake District and have distinctive black coats and white faces. They’re not the best sheep for meat or wool and are really kept as part of the natural heritage of the Lakes. The herdy company use this logo, and we have a range of their goods, including these mugs.

An edtech mug

I think I have shared this before, but you may not have appreciated the sheer majesty of my edtech mug. Hand decorated (I know, the lettering looks so professional), this is my work mug. Nobody can (or would want to) pinch this. All edtech people should have one and you are just jealous you haven’t got one.

Just like the 70s…

We had a few short power cuts last night, and then at 9.30 this morning it all went out. Didn’t come back on until 3 this afternoon, meaning that a) I had to the gym to work (in the cafe, may have sneaked in a run) and b) when at home I had to make tea by boiling a pan of water. Can you imagine the depravation? It reminded me of the regular power cuts we used to have in the 70s when we always had a stack of candles under the sink. I thought that was normal then, but today reminded me of how rare they are now.

The value of a cuppa

Yesterday some OU colleagues released interim findings for their Enduring Love project, looking at long-lasting relationships. It’s a very interesting report that doesn’t come at the subject with any agenda, but rather tries to find out what life is like for couples now. A couple of interesting findings: “Heterosexual parents are the group least likely to be there for each other, to make ‘couple time’, to pursue shared interests, to say ‘I love you’ and to talk openly to one another.”
And the one the press liked: “Surprise gifts and small acts of kindness were valued highly, with ‘a cup of tea’ being singled out as a significant sign of their partner’s appreciation”.
My wife doesn’t like tea (I know!) but I do make her coffee. I don’t often use a tea-pot but had run out of tea-bags so today had to go for loose leaves. I’m not sure it is vastly superior as tea purists like to believe.

An ideal gift

I met a visitor from Finland yesterday, and by way of thankyou she gave me this Moomin mug. This is an ideal gift for me – I love mugs and I also have fond memories of Moomins. So, basically, if you want me to do anything, just offer me a cool mug. Or beer. Or wine. Maybe biscuits.

Le Tour

I bought a Tour mug in France, and am drinking a nice dose of EPO here, as suggested by Lance Armstrong (okay, it’s tea). The book is Chris Sidwell’s excellent history of the Tour, A Race for Madmen. If you want an introduction to it, and what it means then I recommend this book.
