Together. Stronger

Daughter and I went to see Wales v Belgium in the quarter finals tonight at the Cardiff fanzone. After the worst week in british politics in living memory, it was nice to see some unity. What a game, what a night. I’m so glad we went, we nearly stayed at home to watch it.

Snigger

This dragon was laughing at the England Iceland game. They often talk about football catching a nation’s mood, but they usually mean it in a positive sense. But there could be no closer match between the national mood and the England performance last night. I gave up supporting England long ago, it’s always a joyless affair, so couldn’t even rise to any indignation. It was just meh.

Some cheer

After the most depressing week I can remember, there was some cheer today as Wales beat Northern Ireland to go through to the quarter finals. Of course sport doesn’t really when thousands of people are losing their jobs, and many others are being abused and in fear of their future, but you have to find some things to lift yourself.

Please don’t take me home

I went to see the Wales Russia game tonight in the fanzone in Cardiff, with daughter and three mates. Well, what a night. Wales demolished Russia three nil and England could only draw, meaning Wales won the group. This was the scene after the first goal. I love the uncontrolled jubilation. Men hugging each other, sunshine, fireworks, good football – it’s like like living in Italy.

Wales fanzone

Daughter and I went to see the Wales=Slovakia game on a big screen in a fanzone set up in Cardiff. It was very well organised and family friendly. A great game, Wales first in an international tournament for 58 years, and they won 2-1. Here are the joyous scenes on scoring the second goal.
