Needed to do some thinking today so took dogs down to Cold Knap in Barry. I arrived as something akin to a hurricane hit. Bracing is the term. The dogs didn’t enjoy it much either. But I got some thinking done.

Play fighting
Sandy and Pip playing over the fields. Dog playing can look more vicious than it is. Like wrestling.
Stray
You may think this is my dog, Pip, but it is in fact a stray. Someone brought it round to me thinking it was Pip. There was no collar on him, so I took him to the vets and they scanned for a chip. His owner was away and was being looked after by relatives and he’d escaped from the garden. I returned him to the grateful owners. I think Pip was quite keen for him to stay, whereas Sandy thought ‘not another one’. Anyway, good deed done.
Sunshine swim
After a rainy start to the day, the weather returned to something August-like, so I took the dogs for a walk down by the river and they had a nice frolic. I didn’t join them.
Watch dog
Went for a boat trip on Coniston Water today. This chap belonged to one of the crew and was continually on the lookout for swimmers and other dogs.
Technology for dogs
In my building at the OU they are setting up this animal computer interaction lab. It looks interesting, the idea being I guess that with the right interfaces we can get dogs to do a lot more than lead people. I don’t think it would work for either of my dogs though: one would raise a half interested eyebrow and then resume sleeping, the other would jump up at it, wrestle something away, bring it to you, sprint around for 10 minutes, then sleep.
Buns this way
At OKFest this dog sat outside the bun van every day. I like to think his patience paid off in the end and he got a bun. Left the conference at lunchtime. They had gone for the unconference approach,so apart from keynotes all the sessions were discussion and activity based, not presentations. I have to say that the venue, although cool, really wasn’t well suited and you couldn’t hear anything in many sessions. Also, I really missed being given some useful info that I didn’t have before. Bring back bulleted powerpoint slides I say!
Let the right one in
Crap photo today (no change there then). My two dogs look on waiting for me to let them in. One has done “their business” and one hasn’t. Let the right one in.
Cupboard love
My dogs are looking at me so intently because a) they love me or b) I am eating a bacon roll.
Hangdog
While walking my dogs today I came across this sight. This is a Staffordshire cross, the chap explained to me. They’d got him from a home and he is obsessed with rope swings. He had jumped up onto this one and wouldn’t let go. He was hanging about a foot above the ground, and had been there some time. Eventually he would tire and let go, but until then nothing on earth could persuade him to unclamp his jaws. Not even my dogs jumping up at him could distract him from the task of remaining locked on. I was glad he wasn’t clamped around my arm.
Any sensible person knows dogs are vastly superior to cats as a pet, but sometimes they can be a bit stoopid.
