Once were facebook
These three were the people who, without any official backing or funding, developed the OU Facebook apps (Course Profile and My OU Story).
Back in 2008 it all seemed so new and exciting. I liked, and still like, this skunkworks approach, where you can just do stuff with a bit of time and some ideas, and a few pints of beer. We came up with most of the ideas and approaches here in the cellar bar.
L to R we have Tony Hirst, Stuart Brown and Liam Green-Hughes. This is the last time this gang may be assembled in the OU Cellar Bar as Liam is leaving for an internet TV start-up.
Raise a glass to Hitch
Rather belatedly, as he died on the 15th, a blip tribute to the great essayist Christopher Hitchens. It is now a commonplace to say that you didn’t always agree with him, but liked the way he said it, and this is also true for me. But I admired his conviction to steer a course he thought to be true, to always fight intellectual dogma, and most importantly, his love for words. Anyone wanting to construct an argument in text should read Hitchens. He probably would have preferred a glass of whisky, but I only had beer, so farewell the Hitch.

This is the type of sign I like to see in a pub
The Travellers Rest
My daughter was at a Christmas Fayre this afternoon, so my wife and I walked a couple of miles to this pub outside Caerphilly. It was a good, muddy walk through the forest (a ‘hunt’ passed us on horses, but with no dogs). We had our dog, so sat outside, had a sandwich and a pint and then walked back.
The pub dates back to the 1800s and was presumably a stopping point for people heading for Cardiff from the valleys.
