Daughter woke up having had a dream about a rainbow cake and asked if we could make one. When I agreed I wasn’t fully aware of what a massive undertaking this was. It entailed baking six sponges, and then stacking them to create this architectural masterpiece.
Next time I’m hoping she has a dream about going to a pub and having a sunday roast.

Keep out
Saw this sign on my run today. I didn’t have time to go exploring, but am I the only one to whom this sign screams “Come this way!”
Maybe it’s like Cardiff’s Area 51
Godlight
Was driving back from daughter’s drumming lesson tonight when we saw this dramatic sunset light over the hills. It reminded me of Spielberg’s phrase “godlight” which he has used to great effect (think Close Encounters)
A MacNeill
Sheila MacNeill gave me this lovely painting of a blip I posted a while back (a lily in my garden). I got it framed today and it has pride of place in my kitchen. I really like her painting style. Thanks, Sheila!
I can only pity those of you who don’t own a MacNeill original.
Get your ducks in a row
Here they are, all lined up for metaphor inspection
Save the social sciences
You may have heard that a ministerial decree in Japan is forcing universities to close social science and humanities departments. This is all part of a wider narrative that a degree is only about securing a job. The danger is once it is done in one country it becomes permissible in others.
We are undergoing an office move at the moment (not me), and my colleague Rob Farrow, rescued these old 70s social science texts from a retiring colleague. That would be a good pile to work through.
Precipitation
This photo doesn’t capture just how heavy the rain was today. Streets turned to rivers, trousers turned to mush, dogs turned to whimpering wrecks.
Red Harvest
Is the title of one of my favourite books, by Dashiell Hammett.
Panthers
The Nottingham Panthers were the visitors tonight. It was a scrappy, niggly game, that was 0-0 going into the 3rd period (this is very rare in British hockey), there were two quick goals to make it 1-1, and then we won in overtime. Not a classic.
Here the panthers warm up by hitting the puck very hard against the plexiglass making photographers jump.
Bouquet of barbed wire
This title came to mind when I took this picture. It was a TV series in the UK in the 70s, and was regarded as a bit fruity I recall. I wasn’t allowed to watch it, and it seemed to go on forever.
This barbed wire is by a meadow on my regular run.
