The coach

Last hockey related blip for a while, I promise.
We went up to Coventry to se the Devils play in the semi-final of the challenge cup today. We went with Red Army Travel, which meant by coach. The team won 4-1, and afterwards, the Devils player-coach Andrew Lord (the one with the hat), came on the coach to say thanks to all the fans for their support. I bet Mourinho doesn’t do that. So yes, this a coach on the coach. Didn’t get back until 2am though, I think I’ll stick to organising my own travel in future.

Saying thanks

And today we got the train up to Dundee to see the Devils play the Dundee Stars. There was about 350 Devils fans here, which about matched the Dundee crowd. We won 4-2 and the team came over to say thanks afterwards. I missed it but they joined the fans in the bar afterwards for karaoke as well. You don’t see football players doing that.

Chirping

Daughter and I have come up to Scotland to see two Cardiff Devils games (they played in Edinburgh last night too but we couldn’t make that one). Tonight was against the Braehead Clan. Our seats were right up against the glass. Our arena is a crappy blue tent, whereas Breahead is a nice, 6000 seater stadium
The team were great and we won 3-0. Here Clarkson gives does some chirping to wind up Fitzgerald.

Fade to Grey

This photo has not been altered, this is how monochrome it was out there today.
Title is nod to Steve Strange who died yesterday. I wasn’t really a Visage fan, so won’t pretend it has hit me hard (obviously it’s sad when anyone dies), but as you get older, more of these celebrities from your youth pass on. I am often surprised at how young they are – he was only 55. I thought at the time these people were a lot older than me, but that difference of only a few years is less significant as you get older.

H818 conference

In IET we run a Masters programme, one element of which is a course called H818 The Networked Practitioner. It culminates in an online conference for the students (spread over three days). Each student does a 15 minute presentation about an elearning project of their choice that they have developed over the course. In each of the three days there is also a keynote, and it was my turn last night. This is the second year we have run it, and the level of presentations and research on display is remarkable. I had my doubts as to whether this format would work, but I think students really get a lot out of it, and it provides a great culmination to the course.
Doesn’t make for a great photo though, but I spent from 7.30 am to 9.30 pm in front of my computer yesterday, so not much choice. Yes, you can break out the violins.

Not suitable

Went to see a film in 4DX today. It means your seat rumbles, water is sprayed in your face, cold air is streamed at you, and smoke billows around the screen, at appropriate points in the film. I hated it. Far from making you feel like you are ‘in’ the film it actually pulls you out and you become aware of being pitched around. It also cost an extra tenner. The film was Jupiter Ascending, which was jaw droppingly bad.. Apart from that, good night out.
